Distressed 6 Dollar Estate Chair With Good Bones
Acrylic Paint {Vermilion Orange} & Textile Medium & Foam Brush From Hobby Lobby
What I did:
Gave the chair a quick wipe down with a little warm soapy water and let dry
Mixed 2 parts paint to 1 part textile medium {the medium will help the paint adhere to the fabric and keep it from getting stiff as a brick}
I started with a small section and sprayed it with a water bottle to get the fabric slightly wet, you want the paint to soak into the fabric.
I used long broad strokes and worked fairly quick. Depending on the type of fabric you have, it can be a little tricky to keep the paint even looking. Try not to freak out if it gets splotchy, just keep painting and smoothing it out.
I painted and painted and then painted some more…I ended up putting two coats on to achieve the desired color.
I think I’m in love. Its not perfect, but pretty good for a first attempt. I love the character that the rips and tears give this chair and the color is to die for. I also REALLY like saying the word “Vermilion”. If you say it with a sinister accent, its sound very eee-vil and mysterious.
You wouldn’t want to have an entire living room of painted furniture, but for an accent piece, its fantastical!
The cushion part is still fairly soft, it has a little bit of a leathery feel and look and slightly rough texture to it, but you can sit in it without feeling like the paint is cracking or that it will rub off onto your bootie.
There are tons of tutorials and various methods online for painting upholstery, just pick one and go for it!
